For 80 years, The Junior League of Greater Lakeland, Inc. (JLGL) has rallied round Lakeland to implement and support the community building efforts of this city. JLGL has a proud history of creating sustainable change and effectively meeting community needs in the areas of family literacy and school readiness.

With funds raised through partnership with Pig Fest and the volunteer efforts of Junior League members, JLGL continues to impact this community and bring awareness to the importance of family literacy and school readiness through three important community programs:

•  World of Reading, a FREE-to-the-community event designed to foster a love of reading and encourage parent involvement in the reading process, reaches more than 1,500 children and their families each year.

•  Ready to Read is a Junior League initiative that supports a Title I School with a vision and a plan to help their students improve reading skills. Ready to Read components include: two parent involvement workshops, supplies for classroom teachers, and the fulfillment of at least one item from the school’s wish list.

•  Reading is Fundamental (RIF) provides books to all students in select elementary schools in the Greater Lakeland area.  Schools are chosen based on free/reduced lunch data, as well reading scores.  Approximately 15,000 books are distributed per year to students in nine Lakeland elementary schools.

The members of the Junior League understand the importance of giving back to the community not only through the efforts of the League, but in partnership with numerous non-profit and volunteer organizations in the community.  Junior League  is committed to promoting volunteerism, developing the potential of women and improving the community through the effective action and leadership of trained volunteers.
